The Roanoke Valley’s only professional Equity theatre, Mill Mountain Theatre has been producing comedies, dramas, musicals, revues and shows for children since 1964. From two stages in Center In the Square, Mill Mountain Theatre offers central and western Virginia professional theatre year-round. In 2017, MMT’s schedule included just over 300 arts events, including performances, concerts, classes and camps, employing over 400 actors, directors, designers, musicians, technicians and artists, for audiences of over 25,000 people including 2800 youth under age 18.
As a part of the Center in the Square family, Opera Roanoke brings
world-class opera to the stage in Roanoke that also offers an experience
that the greater area would be without. With several partnerships
throughout the area, Opera Roanoke is able to expose world famous
operas to patrons all over the local region.
Roanoke Ballet Theatre is dedicated to increasing the public appreciation of dance in its variety of forms while serving the needs of the community through education, outreach, and performance. We are entering our 39th season and have just completed our 11th year under the direction of Sandra Meythaler. In the past 11 years Roanoke Ballet has introduced a pre-professional company for the school, a professional company to represent the ballet, and have increased our performances to include not only mainstage performances at the Jefferson Center, but also touring performances in surrounding cities, a student showcase, and intimate Black Box performances at our Grandin Road studios. These are financially accessible to any interested person. RBT is dedicated to collaborating with other arts agencies in Roanoke, as well as providing outreach to schools, retirement and nursing home communities, hospitals, and other institutions to share the joy that is dance.
Another of the organizations that became part of Center in the Square
later in their existence, the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra provides music
that absorbs you into another place and often another time. RSO is known
for traveling in the area exposing the community at large to music that
ranges from classical orchestra pieces to classic rock done by an orchestra. Utilizing their potential to reach a greater audience, they can perform at
large venues such as the Salem Civic Center or smaller, more intimate
settings such as the Taubman Museum of Art.
